Research & Scholarship
Research from the Stoll Applied Aquatic Ecology Lab spans aquatic ecology, algal community dynamics, nutrient limitation, harmful algal blooms, and applied freshwater conservation. Our work is shared through peer-reviewed publications, scientific conferences, student presentations, technical reports, and products developed for conservation and management partners.
Students in the Stoll Lab are encouraged to communicate their research to both scientific and public audiences.
Our goal is for students to move beyond collecting data and develop the skills needed to interpret their findings, tell the story behind their science, and communicate why their research matters.
Scientific communication extends beyond academic conferences. We believe freshwater science is most useful when it is accessible to the people who study, manage, protect, and interact with aquatic ecosystems.
From 2023–2025, Dr. Stoll delivered approximately 30 invited presentations, workshops, and sampling demonstrations reaching roughly 600 participants across Michigan. These programs focused on the ecology and spread of Didymosphenia geminata (didymo), citizen-science monitoring, and ways that anglers, conservation organizations, agencies, and community members can contribute to protecting freshwater ecosystems.
Additional outreach has included presentations on citizen science and didymo management at the Michigan Inland Lakes Convention and Michigan Lakes and Streams Association Annual Conference.
